The radiologic evaluation of the pituitary fossa should include a skull radiograph to demonstrate the floor of the pituitary fossa. The routine use of tomography is no longer necessary since many of the minor abnormalities that were detected probably represent normal variants rather then being the pathognomonic changes of small tumours. Tomography of the sella, however, may be necessary if there are difficulties in visualising the floor of the fossa, for instance due to overlying shadows or to the lack of pneumatisation of the sphenoid sinus, or if the patient is about to undergo transsphenoidal surgery.
